The Apopka Fire Department announced on May 8 that May is recognized as National Water Safety Month, encouraging residents to practice safe behaviors while swimming. The department provided several tips for staying safe at pools and beaches as summer approaches.
National Water Safety Month serves as a reminder of the importance of water safety for people of all ages. With more individuals expected to participate in swimming and other water activities during warmer months, awareness about potential risks and preventive measures becomes especially important.
The Apopka Fire Department recommends swimming only in designated areas supervised by lifeguards and always swimming with a buddy rather than alone. The department also said children should be taught to ask permission before going near water, and young children should never be left unattended. “Make sure everyone in your family learns to swim. (Enroll in age-appropriate swim lessons.)” the announcement said.
Additional recommendations include maintaining constant supervision without distractions when overseeing swimmers, securing pools with proper barriers, and having safety equipment such as cell phones, life jackets, and first aid kits readily available. Residents seeking more information about water safety or local swim lessons are encouraged to visit the American Red Cross website or learn about offerings at Camp Wewa throughout the year.
As community members prepare for increased outdoor activity during summer, officials hope these reminders will help reduce accidents around water.
