The City of Apopka announced on May 27 that it has proclaimed May 2026 as Building Safety Month. The proclamation highlights the city’s commitment to recognizing the importance of safe homes, commercial structures, and infrastructure in both daily life and during disasters.

The proclamation states that confidence in the resilience of buildings within the community is achieved through the dedication of professionals such as building safety and fire prevention officials, architects, engineers, builders, tradespeople, design professionals, laborers, plumbers, and others in the construction industry. These individuals work throughout the year to ensure safe construction practices.

According to the proclamation, these professionals are dedicated members of the International Code Council. The council is described as a nonprofit organization that brings together local, state, territorial, tribal, and federal officials who are experts in developing high-quality codes aimed at protecting buildings where people live, learn, work, and play. The document notes that modern building codes include safeguards against hazards such as hurricanes, tornadoes, wildland fires, and floods.

Building Safety Month is sponsored by the International Code Council to remind residents about “the critical role of our communities’ largely unknown protectors of public safety,” referring to local code officials. The theme for Building Safety Month 2026 is “Built to Last,” which encourages increased involvement and awareness regarding building safety at personal, local, and global levels.

The proclamation calls on people everywhere each year during Building Safety Month to consider their commitment toward improving building safety and resilience while acknowledging essential services provided by various government departments involved in protecting lives and property.

Mayor Nick Nesta formally proclaimed May 2026 as Building Safety Month at a commission meeting held on May 20, alongside Apopka City Commissioners and City Building Official John Hanson.
