Deacon Jones died June 3, 2013, at age 74
David “Deacon” Jones died on June 3, 2013, at age 74. He was born in Eatonville, Florida, where he attended Hungerford High School. He played football, basketball, and baseball. He overcame early health issues and challenges related to segregation. He played college football at South Carolina State and Mississippi Vocational. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in 1961. Jones became known for his pass-rushing skill and coined the term “sack.” He played 14 seasons in the NFL with the Rams, Chargers, and Redskins. He earned eight Pro Bowl selections and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1980. He later acted in films, worked in broadcasting, and supported youth through the Deacon Jones Foundation. His number 75 was retired by the Rams. The NFL named its annual sack leader award in his honor. Eatonville was the place where his life and football path began.
