UCF Athletics announced on May 4 its support for the 61 Foundation and The Shawn Clark Legacy Foundation, an initiative focused on improving the physical and mental health of coaches through awareness, prevention, and support.
The effort is inspired by former UCF offensive line coach Shawn Clark, who passed away in fall 2025. Founded by his wife Jonelle Clark, The Shawn Clark Legacy Foundation aims to help coaches and their families by encouraging proactive health care and promoting a culture that values wellness as much as performance.
Central to this initiative is “The 61 Initiative,” a program that encourages coaches to undergo annual physical and mental health screenings before each season. The program also focuses on education, open dialogue, and access to support systems for coaches, staff members, and their families.
“Shawn Clark meant so much to our program and to me personally,” said Scott Frost, UCF head football coach. “He was an outstanding coach, but more importantly, he was a great husband, father and teammate. This initiative is about honoring Shawn by taking care of the people who give so much to this profession. If we can help even one coach step back, prioritize their health and be there longer for their family, then we’re making a real difference.”
Terry Mohajir, UCF Vice President and Director of Athletics said: “In his time here, Shawn quickly became a strong contributor to our department and will always be part of UCF. We’re proud to support the 61 Foundation and The Shawn Clark Legacy Foundation in their mission to care for the whole coach. We ask so much of our coaches, and this initiative will ensure they’re supported mentally, physically and personally.”
Through its partnership with these foundations, UCF Athletics plans to promote participation in The 61 Initiative while continuing efforts that foster a culture prioritizing health among coaching staff members.
The Shawn Clark Legacy Foundation operates as a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of coaches through programs designed around awareness-building activities as well as prevention measures supporting long-term well-being.
