UCF Athletics announced on May 4 its support for the 61 Foundation and The Shawn Clark Legacy Foundation, an initiative focused on improving the physical and mental health of coaches through awareness, prevention, and support.
The initiative was created in memory of former UCF offensive line coach Shawn Clark, who died suddenly in fall 2025. Founded by his wife Jonelle Clark, The Shawn Clark Legacy Foundation aims to help coaches and their families by encouraging proactive healthcare and promoting a culture that values wellness alongside performance.
Central to this effort is “The 61 Initiative,” which encourages coaches to commit to annual physical and mental health screenings before each season. The program also highlights education, open dialogue, and access to support systems for coaches, staff members, and their families.
“Shawn Clark meant so much to our program and to me personally,” said Scott Frost, UCF head football coach. “He was an outstanding coach, but more importantly, he was a great husband, father and teammate. This initiative is about honoring Shawn by taking care of the people who give so much to this profession. If we can help even one coach step back, prioritize their health and be there longer for their family, then we’re making a real difference.”
The foundation’s work focuses on raising awareness about unique health challenges within coaching; providing proactive screenings; and supporting coaches’ families during difficult times. “In his time here, Shawn quickly became a strong contributor to our department and will always be part of UCF,” said Terry Mohajir, UCF Vice President and Director of Athletics. “We’re proud to support the 61 Foundation and The Shawn Clark Legacy Foundation in their mission to care for the whole coach. We ask so much of our coaches, and this initiative will ensure they’re supported mentally, physically and personally.”
UCF Athletics plans to amplify the foundation’s mission through partnership efforts that encourage participation in The 61 Initiative while fostering a culture where wellness is prioritized throughout the coaching community.
