Pulitzer Prize-Winning Journalist, Acclaimed Filmmaker, and Immigration Advocate kicks off 2021-22
Seminole State College of Florida's Speaker Series will host its first event for the 2021-22 academic year on Thursday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m. with a Zoom webinar panel discussion with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, acclaimed filmmaker, and immigration advocate Jose Antonio Vargas.

Dear America: Notes of an Undocumented Citizen
Vargas was born in the Philippines in 1993 and at the age of 12 came to the United States to live with his grandparents. At age 16, he found out he was in the U.S. illegally.
In 2011, the New York Times Magazine published a groundbreaking essay he wrote in which he revealed and chronicled his life in America as an undocumented immigrant and in 2018, Vargas’ memoir, Dear America: Notes of an Undocumented Citizen, was published.
Vargas is the founder of Define American, a nonprofit media and culture change organization that uses the power of narrative to humanize conversations about immigrants. Passionate about the role of arts in society and promoting equity in education, he serves on the advisory board of TheDream.US, a scholarship fund for undocumented immigrant students.
Vargas will share his personal story during his presentation, which will include a Q&A session.

Each session, which will be presented via Zoom webinar, will open at 6:45 p.m. Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
