PROTECT PLANTS & YARDS: Follow these protection tips from UF IFAS Extension Seminole County.

3

Seminole County recently issued the following announcement.

BEFORE A FREEZE:

Water your plants to prevent drying out.

Move container plants inside or push them closely together.

Cover plants with sheets, quilts, plastic, or commercial frost cloths. Extend covers to ground to trap heat, securing with heavy items. Do not let covers touch plants directly.

Turn off automatic sprinklers or timers, or shut off water supply to the irrigation system. Cover irrigation valves and backflow preventers with plastic bags and foam insulation tape.

AFTER A FREEZE:

Assess water needs and carefully water plants to defrost soil.

Do not immediately prune damaged foliage. Allow dead foliage to continue insulating plant until spring.

Hold off on fertilizing plants or lawns. Lawns naturally become dormant and turn brown during winter and will rebound in spring.

Remove plant and irrigation covers when warm and sunny.
