The Longwood City Commission recognized Milwee Middle School at the March 20, 2023, Regular Commission Meeting for receiving the Merit School of Excellence Award and for being recognized as one of the nation’s top 24 Magnet Schools of Excellence by Magnet Schools of America for 2023.
To receive a national merit award, Magnet Schools of America (MSA) members must submit a detailed application that is scored by a panel of educators. These schools are judged and scored on their demonstrated ability to raise student academic achievement, promote racial and socioeconomic diversity, provide integrated curricula and instruction, and create strong family and community partnerships that enhance the school's magnet theme.
Out of over 400 applications each year, Milwee Middle School Pre-Engineering Magnet has been recognized by MSA in 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2020, their top awards. In 2021 this recognition was not available. In 2022 they were named one of the top 26 Magnet Schools of Excellence by Magnet Schools of America, the national association for magnet and theme-based schools. Of the 26 schools, they were one of the ten schools considered for their highest award. In 2023 they received the merit school of excellence award and were again recognized as one of the nation's top 24 Magnet Schools of Excellence by Magnet Schools of America. They have been awarded this honor for six out of the past seven years.
Principal James C. Kubis attended the meeting to accept the Certificate of Recognition. He sent a letter to the Spartan Families saying, “I want to thank our teachers, staff, parents, and students for all your hard work and dedication to Milwee. The vision and mission are seen throughout the school day. We truly feel the passion and love for our students. This honor shows the impact that you have made in the lives of our students. You should be very proud.”
Milwee will be recognized and receive the 2023 National Magnet School of Excellence Merit Award during an awards ceremony held during Magnet Schools of America's 40th National Conference on April 22, 2023.
