WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Cory Mills (FL-07) and Congressman Darrell Issa (CA-48) have introduced legislation to clarify the oversight jurisdiction of the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR). The bill aims to ensure transparency and thorough oversight over the assistance provided to the Afghan people by the United States.
Since the catastrophic withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, some agencies have challenged SIGAR's mandate, hindering its ability to provide effective oversight. The State Department and USAID, for example, have refused to hand over important documents related to SIGAR's oversight of assistance provided to Afghanistan.
Rep. Mills, a former Army Combat Veteran who served in Afghanistan, emphasized the need for transparency and accountability. He stated, "The bottom line is that American taxpayers deserve to know if their hard-earned money is funding the Taliban or contributing to waste, fraud, or abuse. My bill will ensure SIGAR can properly oversee these efforts and provide Congress and the American people transparency."
Rep. Issa criticized the lack of public accountability and government transparency regarding the withdrawal from Afghanistan. He commented, "President Biden's catastrophic withdrawal from Afghanistan was witnessed by the world in real time, yet public accountability and government transparency of this Administration's fiasco is still delayed, denied, and prevented from public view." He further highlighted the blocking of SIGAR's access to critical information about ongoing U.S. assistance to Afghanistan and the diversion of international aid to the Taliban and its allies.
The legislation introduced by Rep. Mills and Rep. Issa aims to put an end to the dispute over SIGAR's oversight jurisdiction. It seeks to ensure that SIGAR can continue its important work of overseeing assistance to Afghanistan and providing transparency to Congress and the American people.
