Rep. Mills, a member of the House Armed Services Committee and an Army Combat Veteran, has expressed his concerns over the Senate's version of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for fiscal year 2024. In a statement, he highlighted the changes made by the Senate that weakened and eliminated many of the House-passed goals.
Mills emphasized his commitment to improving the lives of servicemembers and their families, stating, "I always look at how we can improve the lives of all those serving and their families." He further mentioned his support for the House-passed bill, which included numerous initiatives to support servicemembers and prioritize national security.
However, the Senate's version of the NDAA fell short of Mills' expectations. He voiced his opposition to an extension of the surveillance program under Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), calling it a threat to Americans' constitutional rights. Mills stated, "As a constitutionalist, I cannot in good conscience vote for a bill that imperils the constitutional rights of Americans by extending the government's surveillance power."
Highlighting the need for privacy protection and a strong military, Mills voted against the final version of the Senate NDAA. He clarified that his vote was not against the brave men and women serving in the military or the nation's military priorities. Instead, it was a vote to support American privacy and freedoms, which the military fights to protect.
Mills' decision to vote against the Senate NDAA reflects his dedication to upholding constitutional rights and ensuring the privacy of American citizens.
