Congressman Cory Mills of Florida, along with several other House Republicans, has called for the resignation of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. The demand comes after Austin failed to disclose his hospitalization, leading to disruptions within the Department of Defense.
In a joint letter addressed to Secretary Austin, Congressman Mills expressed serious concerns about the lack of communication regarding Austin's hospitalization. The letter emphasized the breach of national security caused by the failure to notify the White House, Congress, subordinates, and the American people.
"I write today with grave concern regarding your failure to communicate your recent incapacitation to the White House, Congress, your subordinates, and the American people," the letter read. "Considering these failures, I ask for your immediate resignation from your role as Secretary of Defense."
Congressman Mills also highlighted the potential violation of U.S. Code by Austin for not disclosing his temporary vacancy. "While I wish Secretary Lloyd Austin a speedy recovery, his decision to not notify President Biden and NSA Sullivan, among others, is a huge national security breach," Mills stated.
Mills further emphasized the importance of immediate resignation due to the increased threats and attacks on troops abroad. "Given the circumstances, I am demanding his immediate resignation," Mills said, noting that Austin has displayed a dereliction of duty on multiple occasions.
This call for resignation is not the first action taken by Congressman Mills against Austin. In August 2023, Mills introduced articles of impeachment against Austin, citing the "botched and shameful handling of the Biden administration's withdrawal in Afghanistan." Mills believes that transparency and accountability are crucial for the American people.
