Washington, D.C.— Congressman Cory Mills (FL-07) released the following statement after the State Department agreed to let members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee read the Afghanistan withdrawal dissent cable, which allows diplomats to quickly raise serious concerns directly to senior officials:

“While I’m pleased Secretary Blinken has finally agreed to release the dissent cable leading up to the botched Afghanistan withdrawal to the House Foreign Affairs Committee, it should not have taken this long for the Biden administration to cooperate with Congress.

“As I’ve said all along, the 13 Gold Star families and the American people deserve transparency about what really happened leading up to that catastrophic event.

“Secretary Blinken and the Biden administration have left the American people in the dark and avoided taking responsibility for the 13 service members who lost their lives.

“I want to thank Chairman McCaul for fighting for the entire committee’s access to the truth. I look forward to reviewing the cable this week, and although this is a step in the right direction towards getting answers to what really transpired, I won’t stop fighting until there is accountability for the catastrophic decisions made during our withdrawal from Afghanistan that led to lives lost.”
